NSW: Airport declared safe after bomb scare

SYDNEY, Dec 7 AAP - Sydney airport has been declared safe after a bomb scare today.

Construction workers uncovered what is believed to be an unexploded mortar shell while
working on the airport's long-term car park this morning.

The site, in the airport's south east corner between the east-west terminal and General
Holmes Drive, was evacuated as police, the army and fire brigade moved in to examine the
device.

However, on closer inspection it was found to be an "armour-piercing, solid projectile",
a Mascot police spokeswoman said.

"Or a big piece of metal," she said.

It is believed the empty shell may have been mixed with some landfill used to fill
the area some time ago, the spokeswoman said.

"The only way it could hurt you was if you dropped it on your foot," she added.
